URGENT : DES ÉTUDIANTS OUGANDAIS ARRÊTÉS CE 4 OCTOBRE 2022 PAR LA POLICE LOCALE DANS LE CADRE DE MANIFESTATIONS CONTRE LE PROJET EACOP DE TOTALENERGIES

La police ougandaise a arrêté ce mardi 4 octobre des étudiants au cours d’une manifestation pacifique contre le projet EACOP de TotalEnergies. Des arrestations injustifiées démontrant une nouvelle fois que toutes les voix critiques du projet pétrolier en Ouganda risquent de se faire arrêter. Ce projet provoque l'expulsion de près de 118 000 personnes, et menace de nombreuses aires et réserves protégées. Il fait face à plusieurs procédures judiciaires, en Ouganda, en France et au niveau de la Cour de Justice d’Afrique de l’Est, et a été lourdement condamné le 15 septembre dernier dans une résolution votée par le Parlement européen.
La coalition #StopEacop appelle à la libération immédiate des personnes arrêtées, et demande aux autorités européennes et à ses Etats membres de tout faire pour obtenir leur libération.
En début de semaine dernière, une manifestation d’étudiants militant en faveur du projet a également eu lieu à Kampala, et avait au contraire été encadrée par la police locale qui leur a ouvert la voie.
Omar Elmawi, coordinateur de la coalition #StopEACOP, a déclaré : "Il est triste qu'à notre époque, des citoyens innocents soient arrêtés pour avoir simplement exercé leur droit d'expression, garanti par la Constitution, sur le projet EACOP et les dommages qu'il causera aux personnes, à la nature et au climat. Il s'agit d'un mépris flagrant de leurs droits et libertés en tant que citoyens ougandais et cela contribue aux violations continues des droits de l'homme contre ceux qui se sont opposés à ce projet. Le gouvernement ougandais doit d'abord protéger les droits de ses citoyens et non répondre à l'avidité des entreprises".

BREAKING: UGANDAN STUDENTS ARRESTED BY LOCAL POLICE DURING PROTESTS AGAINST EACOP PROJECT
The Ugandan police arrested on Tuesday October 4th students heading towards the European Union offices to protest against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline project (EACOP), a project led by French energy giant TotalEnergies. An unjustified arrest, considering it was a peaceful demonstration of young people protesting against the implementation of a fossil fuel project with intense environmental, social and human rights impacts in their country. This project is causing the eviction of nearly 118,000 people, and threatens many protected areas and reserves. It is facing several legal proceedings, in Uganda, in France and at the East African Court of Justice.
The EACOP oil mega-project was strongly condemned on September 15 by the European parliament in a Joint motion for a resolution on violations of human rights in Uganda and Tanzania linked to investments in fossil fuels projects
The #StopEACOP Coalition is calling for the immediate release of those arrested.
Earlier last week, another group of Ugandan students supporting the project protested against the European Union’s (EU) resolution on Uganda’s oil project. This demonstration was not pressured by the local police.
Omar Elmawi, the Coordinator of the #StopEACOP Coalition stated, “it is sad that in this time and age innocent citizens of a country are arrested for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right of expression on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline and the harms it will cause to People, Nature and Climate. This is a blatant disregard of their rights and freedoms as citizens of Uganda and contributes to the continued violations of human rights against those that have opposed this exploitative project. The Ugandan government need to protect its citizens rights first and not the interests of corporate greed”
