Join the Global Week of Action and fight for our future and stop EACOP

The opposition to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is ongoing and more critical than ever. Although 27 banks and 28 insurers across Europe, North America, and Asia have declined financing or insurance based on environmental concerns and violation of human rights criteria, developers are still adamant about obtaining funding options. Consequently, attention has turned towards China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE) and China Reinsurance Corporation (ChinaRe), who will be essential in determining EACOP's feasibility.

Community leaders from Uganda and Tanzania and local communities directly impacted by EACOP have been engaging with Chinese insurers for several months in conjunction with global human rights and environmental organizations. The #StopEACOP movement organized peaceful protests outside Sinosure facilities and Chinese embassies worldwide in November of 2023 to deliver petitions signed by thousands of affected citizens; however, there has been no response to requests for discussions or meetings thus far.

The StopEACOP movement leverages its current progress to participate in the Insure Our Future Global Week of Action starting from February 26th until March 3rd. This event provides a critical chance for civil society groups, climate justice proponents, and grassroots communities who oppose the EACOP project to collaborate towards urging insurance companies not to finance destructive fossil fuel schemes such as EACOP. We urge our supporters to unite with us in this vital campaign.

Collectively, we can have a significant impact! Stand with the numerous committed persons rallying by our side. Whether you are able to partake in community efforts or merely intend to spread knowledge on digital platforms, every perspective is valuable.

Let's flood social media with the #StopEACOP hashtag during our Twitter storm starting from 10am EAT on Friday, March 1st. Share informative content, personal narratives and photos of your efforts to combat this issue. By uniting forces online, we can generate an undeniable wave of support for our cause.

Let's unite and convey a powerful statement: Africa should not settle for EACOP. Our future must be based on sustainable development, clean energy, as well as preserving our environment and communities. Come together with us to transform this vision into reality!
