Ugandan civil society organisations call for protection of Ramsar wetlands from oil and gas exploitation activities

Fifteen Ugandan civil society organisations (CSOs) have called for the protection of Ramsar wetlands from degradation caused by oil and gas exploitation activities in Uganda. The CSOs have written to the chairperson of Uganda's Ramsar Wetlands Committee expressing concern about the impact that oil and gas exploitation activities could have on local communities, fisheries, tourism operators, and biodiversity conservation. They are calling on the Ugandan government to take action to protect the Ramsar wetlands from degradation by TotalEnergies' oil and gas exploitation activities and to work with relevant bodies to identify wetlands belonging to Lake Victoria that have been affected by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
