Petition for release of four StopEACOP activists

9th December 2022 - Today, four activists were arrested and illegally detained in Kampala, Uganda for organizing a peaceful protest against TotalEnergies’ East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Barigye Bob, Ivan Kabale, Musoke Hamis and Semwanga Jackson faced the brutal force of the Uganda police for exercising their democratic right under the Ugandan constitution to peacefully protest against the EACOP due to the impacts it will have on the People, Nature and Climate.

Barigye Bob was injured during his arrest, and no one knows where Semwanga Jackson is currently being held, which is preventing him from seeing a lawyer.

Two months ago, it was 9 students who suffered the same fate during another peaceful demonstration, in support of an emergency resolution of the European Parliament condemning the EACOP oil mega-project. They still have charges against them for their peaceful demonstration, and are due to appear in court on 14 December.

As civil society organizations from Uganda, East Africa, the African region and the whole world, we demand the following of the Ugandan Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola:

  1. The immediate release of the four activists that have been arrested and are illegally detained by the Ugandan police in Kampala.

  2. The bogus charges against the nine students to be dropped.

  3. Cease and desist from any further harassment of peaceful protests in Uganda related to EACOP, Tilenga and any other controversial project.

  4. A public apology be issued to the victims of this harassment and their families.
